Las Posadas, one of Mexico's most cherished holiday traditions, is a nine-night celebration that begins on December 16th and ends on Christmas Eve. Its roots trace back to the 16th century, when Spanish missionaries introduced the practice to help teach the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, searching for shelter before the birth of Jesus.
The word posada means "inn" or "shelter," and each evening, communities come together to reenact La Peregrinación (the pilgrimage), symbolizing Mary and Joseph’s quest. Participants form a procession, often carrying candles, singing traditional songs like La Canción para Pedir Posada, and knocking on doors as they "seek refuge." After being welcomed inside, the evening transforms into a joyful celebration filled with delicious food, music, and spending time with loved ones.
Over the centuries, Las Posadas have become more than a religious tradition. They are a celebration of unidad, comunidad, y celebracion. For many, they are a way to preserve our cultural roots, passed down through generations as a time of reflection and joy during the holiday season.
At Chasing Camilla, we hold these traditions close to our hearts, celebrating the richness of our culture and sharing its beauty with others.
