Every year on December 12th, millions of people across Mexico and beyond gather to celebrate El Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe, honoring La Virgencita, the beloved patron saint of Mexico and a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and unity for the Latine community.
The story of La Virgen de Guadalupe dates back to 1531 when Juan Diego had a miraculous encounter with the Virgen de Tepeyac Hill, in what is now Mexico City. Appearing with features resembling the local people, she spoke to Juan Diego in his native language, Nahuatl, asking him to build a church in her honor. To convince the local bishop of her appearance, she gifted Juan Diego with roses that miraculously bloomed out of season. When he opened his cloak to reveal the roses, an image of La Virgen de Guadalupe appeared imprinted on the fabric, which can still be seen today at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
La Virgen de Guadalupe has since become a figure of protection, resilience, and solidarity. Her image is seen as a guiding force, often associated with social justice, identity, and the empowerment of women. As December 12th approaches, altars, candles, and images of La Virgencita are lovingly arranged in homes and communities, offering a sacred space for reflection, gratitude, and connection to our roots. The celebration includes prayers, songs, and processions, all in honor of La Virgen’s enduring influence and the shared strength she symbolizes.
We are excited to bring this spirit of la Virgencita to Entre Todas Las Mujeres 2024! This annual event, held in La Virgencita’s honor, will take place at the beautiful @brickatbluestar in the @bluestarartscomplex. Co-hosted by Cristina Martinez from @verythat and Melissa Rojas from @chasingcamilla, this gathering will bring our community together for a day filled with Drag performances, live music, delicious food, and at the heart of it all—the Mercado, featuring artisans and vendors from our community.
